The Russian military and a main Syrian opposition group traded allegations Friday about whether new evidence indicates that either rebels or Syrian military used chemical weapons in the northern area of Aleppo where government forces are trying to regain control of areas they recently lost to insurgents.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that ministry experts have found unexploded ordnance and fragments of munitions containing chlorine and white phosphorus on Aleppo’s southwestern outskirts. Konashenkov said the discovery proves the militants have used chemical weapons against civilians and Syrian army soldiers.

The Russian Defense Ministry has addressed the UN body devoted to monitoring the use of chemical weapons, asking it to send a mission to Aleppo, Syria, following a reported chemical attack by militants in the area.

“[We] ask the OPCW [the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons] governing body to consider sending [its] experts to Aleppo’s ‘1070’ area as soon as possible on a mission to establish the facts of the use of chemical agents as weapons,” the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, told journalists at a news briefing.

Russia’s defence ministry says two of its navy destroyers forced away a Dutch submarine to stop it spying on an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.

The sub was 20km (12 miles) from the Admiral Kuznetsov at the time of the incident, the military said.
