The Russian military is considering the possibility of regaining its Soviet-era bases on Cuba and in Vietnam, the Defense Ministry said Friday, a statement that comes amid growing U.S.-Russia tensions over Syria.
Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov told lawmakers Friday that the ministry is considering the possibility of establishing footholds far away from Russia’s borders.

While the vast majority of illegal border crossings remain concentrated at the Southwest U.S. border between the United States and Mexico, Customs and Border Protection is now warning of an escalating situation on another border front to the east: Florida.
“U.S. Border Patrol has observed a steady increase in maritime illegal immigration and drug-smuggling attempts over the past year up and down Florida’s coastline,” CBP warned in a press release issued late last week.
Venezuela’s embattled President Nicolas Maduro has warned world leaders at a Non-Aligned Summit that his country was being lashed by a US economic war aimed at toppling him.
Speaking at the same event, which opened Saturday, Maduro’s closest regional ally, Cuban President Raul Castro, echoed the charge, despite his country’s thawing relations with the United States.
