The US Navy’s newest warship is designed to carry two huge guns that can hit targets 80 miles away – but although that may sound impressive, the Navy has now decided that the necessary ammunition is too expensive.
The Long Range Land-Attack Projectile (LRLAP) is a guided munition capable of hitting targets in “urban canyons of coastal cities with minimal collateral damage,” manufacturer Lockheed Martin said.

Lockheed Martin has revealed a radical turret that allows fighter jets to fire laser weapons at near supersonic speeds.
Because enemy aircraft and missiles can come from anywhere, a laser weapon system on a military aircraft will need to be able to fire in any direction.
Oshkosh Defense won a major initial contract from the U.S. Army on Tuesday to build a new fleet of armored vehicles that will soon replace the Humvee, the Washington Post reported. Under the contract, which could eventually be worth up to $30 billion, Oshkosh is set to build roughly 50,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Army and about 5,500 for the Marine Corps through 2040.
It’s 6-foot-2, with laser eyes and vise-grip hands. It can walk over a mess of jagged cinder blocks, cut a hole in a wall, even drive a car. And soon, Leo, Lockheed Martin’s humanoid robot, will move from the development lab to a boot camp for robots, where a platoon’s worth of the semiautonomous mechanical species will be tested to see if they can be all they can be.
Next month, the Pentagon is hosting a $3.5 million, international competition that will pit robot against robot in an obstacle course designed to test their physical prowess, agility, and even their awareness and cognition.
