Australia’s parliament late Monday rejected the government’s proposal for a national vote on whether to legalise same-sex marriage.

The upper house Senate voted 33-29 against the coalition government’s bid to hold a plebiscite on the issue.

Attorney-General George Brandis introduced the bill into the Senate, where the government does not hold an outright majority, despite expectation the opposition Labor and Greens parties would scupper it.

A GIF posted by Twitter user @PunishedSage has revealed that the Twitter hashtag does not appear in the site’s suggested searches. When you type “#GaysFor” or even “#GaysForTr” into the site’s search function, the hashtags does not appear as a recommendation, despite its popularity in the wake of the Orlando shootings.

Xulhaz Mannan was a rallying figure for Bangladesh’s marginalised but increasingly outspoken lesbian, gay and transgender community, but his brutal murder has dealt a huge blow to the movement and forced some of its leaders underground.

Mannan, who founded Bangladesh’s first magazine for gays and lesbians which he used to launch a vibrant rights movement in the deeply conservative, Muslim-majority country, was hacked to death on Monday along with a fellow activist.
