Tens of thousands of Brazilians have joined street protests against a vote which they say threatens to undermine a major anti-corruption investigation.

The biggest marches have taken place in Sao Paulo’s business district and along Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach.

Four police officers have died after their helicopter crashed over Rio de Janeiro’s notorious City of God favela.
In video footage of the crash, sustained gunfire can be heard before the helicopter drops from the sky, narrowly missing a main road.

The helicopter was giving support to a police operation against gangs in the favela, according to police.
Police reportedly began a large scale operation on Sunday in western Rio, with arrests and seizures of drugs.

A judge in Argentina has ruled that a chimpanzee which spent years living in a secluded cage has legal rights and should be released from the zoo it was being held in.

The Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) filed the case of Cecilia the chimpanzee to the court in Mendoza, arguing her confinement without companionship was “unlawful” and had a detrimental impact on her health.

Federal prosecutors in Brazil filed corruption charges Wednesday against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former president who has wielded influence across Latin America for decades, portraying him as the mastermind of a sprawling graft scheme intended to maintain his party’s grip on the presidency.

Deltan Dallagnol, a prosecutor, called Mr. da Silva the “ultimate commander” of bribery and kickback schemes that allowed his leftist Workers’ Party to build coalitions in Congress, describing him as “the general” at the helm.
