A new variant of Android malware is responsible for what’s believed to be the biggest single theft of Google accounts on record. The so-called Gooligan strain has infected as many as 1.3 million Android phones since August, completely prising the devices open and stealing the tokens users are given to verify they are authorized to access accounts. Its main aim, though, is not to pilfer all that juicy data in Gmail or Docs, but to force users into downloading apps as part of a huge advertising fraud scheme, making as much as $320,000 a month.

Twitter has verified an official English account of the Muslim Brotherhood, despite the platform’s pledge to fight hate speech. Multiple countries have designated the organization as a terrorist group.

On Saturday, Twitter awarded the Muslim Brotherhood a “verification check”, normally given to legitimate and prominent accounts on the platform. The reason for verification remains unclear due to Twitter’s policy of not commenting on individual accounts.

Yahoo provided more details on Wednesday about an epic hack of its services, including that the culprits may have planted software “cookies” for ongoing access to users’ accounts.

In revelations that could jeopardize the company’s pending $4.8 billion acquisition by US telecom giant Verizon, the internet pioneer said it was trying to pin down when it first knew its system had been breached and whether hackers gave themselves a way to get back into accounts whenever they wished.

Tesco Bank’s chief executive has blamed “a systematic, sophisticated attack” for the money taken from 20,000 of its customer accounts.

Benny Higgins said the bank knew “exactly” what the attack was, but could not say more because it was part of a criminal investigation.

He said all affected customers would be refunded by the end of Tuesday.
